Problem

Personal finance tools often trade privacy and control for automation: bank connections, imported activity, dense dashboards, and subscription pressure. Monlio needed to make manual money tracking across currencies and asset classes feel calm, complete, and practical on iPhone and iPad.

Approach

Designed a focused five-screen product around a clear net-worth overview, swipeable account cards, fast manual transaction entry, filters, reports, and a built-in calculator — supported by offline-first storage, optional iCloud sync, and no required bank connection.

Outcome

A live App Store product and launch site for a calm, offline-first money tracker — no bank linking, optional iCloud sync.

The brief

Monlio is a personal finance tracker for people who want to understand their money without handing over bank credentials. The product needed to hold everyday spending, transfers, currency exchanges, crypto, and stock positions inside one coherent model while remaining calm enough for daily use.

The central constraint was deliberate simplicity. Manual entry had to feel fast rather than punitive; multiple currencies and assets had to remain legible; and optional cloud sync could not weaken the offline-first promise.

Design strategy

Design principles

  • Clarity before automation: the product should explain the user’s financial position without importing noise or requiring a bank connection.

  • One picture, many asset types: fiat, crypto, and stocks keep their native details while rolling into one default-currency net worth.

  • Local first, sync second: the app remains useful offline, while iCloud sync and device security are optional layers rather than prerequisites.

Research & discovery

The public product architecture points to three recurring user needs: seeing total net worth quickly, recording activity without friction, and understanding change over time. Those needs map directly to the dashboard, transaction entry, and reporting views rather than being distributed across a larger feature maze.

  • A default-currency net-worth total answers the first question without hiding account-level currencies and assets.

  • Category chips and an inline calculator reduce the cost of manual entry, where small delays compound into abandonment.

  • Daily through yearly report views support both quick checks and longer-term reflection without turning the dashboard into an analytics console.

A Notion-inspired personal finance app for tracking money across currencies and asset classes — without bank linking or clutter.

Exploration

The final structure resolves the product into five primary destinations: dashboard, accounts, transactions, add transaction, and reports. That boundary keeps navigation learnable while allowing each screen to specialize — overview, inventory, history, capture, and analysis.

The visual language is intentionally restrained: generous whitespace, platform-native typography, compact controls, swipeable cards, haptics, empty states, and light and dark modes. The interface stays quiet so balances, accounts, and trends remain the visual priority.

Key decisions

  1. 01

Manual entry as a privacy feature

Rather than treating the lack of bank linking as a limitation, the product makes deliberate entry part of its value: users keep control of credentials, categories, and the meaning of each transaction while finance data remains available offline.

  2. 02

One net-worth layer across fiat, crypto, and stocks

Accounts can use their own currencies and asset types while the dashboard converts them into one default currency. This keeps the top-level picture simple without flattening the underlying portfolio.

  3. 03

A five-screen system with progressive depth

Dashboard, accounts, transactions, add transaction, and reports create a compact mental model. The first screen gives an immediate answer; filters, categories, calculations, and period comparisons appear only when the user asks for more detail.

The work

The dashboard leads with total net worth, followed by swipeable account cards sorted by recent usage and the five latest transactions. Users can hide balances with one tap, preserving usefulness in shared or public contexts.

Accounts support fiat, crypto, and stocks with converted values in a chosen default currency. Transaction history covers income, expense, transfer, and exchange entries, with filtering by type, account, category, and date.

The add flow includes category chips and a calculator keypad for totaling amounts before saving. Reports compare income and expenses across daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly periods, including top categories and period-over-period movement.

Underneath the interface, local SQLite storage keeps the app offline-capable. Optional CloudKit sync connects Apple devices; exchange rates use Frankfurter data, crypto prices use CoinGecko, and stock prices use Yahoo Finance. Face ID, Touch ID, or passcode can protect access.

What I’d do differently

  • Treat manual entry as the core interaction, not an absence of automation; every tap saved in capture protects the product’s privacy-first position.

  • Keep net worth as the primary organizing concept while allowing accounts and assets to retain enough detail for trust and verification.

  • Preserve the distinction between local availability and cloud convenience in both product behavior and launch messaging so optional sync never reads as required infrastructure.
